Project Value: $6m - Completed on budget
Role: Architectural design, structural and services engineering
The multi-purpose community events centre in the heart of Carterton is woven in around the refurbished existing fabric of Carterton’s grade two listed heritage library. Working with the Carterton District Council and over 80 local community groups, WSP Opus Architecture has developed a highly integrated community facility to meet both the current and future needs of the Carterton community.
The WSP Opus team delivered a full design consultancy service, including architectural design, structural and services engineering, transportation and drainage engineering, heritage and archaeology, and external theatre and acoustic specialists.
The design encompasses LVL bracing walls to provide earthquake resistance in the main hall – the second time in the world this New Zealand developed technology has been used. The events centre also features sustainable solutions such as rainwater recycling and passive thermal design. The auditorium/town hall is being fitted out for theatre. The refurbished heritage library is now twice the size and incorporates modern IT and the community Toy Library.
