investigation, consenting and design for Caversham Valley Highway improvements
After completing the investigation and consenting phase of the Caversham Valley Highway Improvements project, we took on the role of designer.
WSP Opus was novated by the NZ Transport Agency to Downer as designer for this early contractor involvement project. Stage one was completed in 2012 and stage two is under construction.
The project involved the scoping and interim scheme assessment report for the duplication of Caversham Bypass from two lanes to median divided four lanes, plus improvements to Caversham Valley Road including vertical alignment improvements at Lookout Point.
Four options were investigated, including a low cost option at existing grades for a 60km/h speed environment and a higher cost option involving grade separation of two major intersections and an operating speed of 80km/h.
The I&R included preliminary geometric design of about 3.5km of highway to complete the urban section of the Dunedin motorway network, along with bridges, retaining structures, services relocation, and the identification of property acquisition requirements.
We provided a range of services including:
- Widening and realigning the existing road
- Intersection design
- Economic evaluation
- Structural design
- Geotechnical appraisal
- Risk assessment
- Cost estimating
- Grade separated intersections
- Liaison with Council around local roading network issues and connectivity
